There has been increased volatility in the SERPS indicating a further Google Algorithm Update between the 20th and 23rd of March 2019. It is possible that it is related to the earlier 12th March Update, but I cannot be 100% sure.

Google has previously said that Core Algorithm Update may take a week or more to roll out, so it is very feasible that this is not a separate update.

I have recently updated my article on the “March 2019 Core Update”, so if you are experiencing a change in Traffic or Rankings, I recommend you check that out.

I’ll be keeping this article reasonably short, with just a summary of the SERP Trackers, who the update affects, and a look at comments in the SEO community.

SERP Trackers show increased Volatility

The SERP Trackers show increased volatility between the 20th and 23rd of March, with a spike on the 22nd. The scale of the update seems much less than the 12th March Update.

Let’s take a look at the SERP trackers:

SEMrush Sensor:

The SEMrush Sensor shows the update commencing on the 20th of March and continuing through to the 23rd of March.

Rank Risk Index:

The Rank Risk Index tracker shows a much smaller update than what the SEMrush Sensor shows.

MozCast:

The MozCast weather report shows increased volatility commencing on the 19th March, continuing to the 21st.

Algoroo:

The Algoroo report again shows volatility between the 20th and 23rd.

SERPMetrics:

The SERPMetrics report similar volatility to the SEMrush Sensor.

Who does the update affect?

Looking at the SEMrush Sensor Deviation (from the average volatility) on the 22nd March:

It would appear that Finance, Autos & Vehicles, Health, and Jobs & Education queries were most affected. While Google does not target individual sectors, the types of queries an update targets could go hand-in-hand with specific industries.

For instance, Finance and Health were hit hard by the E-A-T updates, which targeted whether a site had the necessary Experience, Authority, and Trust.

It looks like these sectors were affected by this update, and while no-one can be certain if it is E-A-T-related, it might be something you want to consider.

Typical remedies for sites hit by E-A-T are to:

  • Get backlinks from high-authority (high E-A-T score) websites in the industry.
  • Ensure all posts are written by (or reviewed by) professionals with suitable qualifications
  • Ensure you have detailed author bios detailing those qualifications.

Chatter in the SEO Community

Let’s take a look at the discussions on WebmasterWorld for this update.

My traffic seems to be down to a trickle today after a huge recovery last week. Whatever they did today has reversed some of the gains. I think it’s better to not get too excited anymore :/ (whoa182_)

We were not hit by any significant penalty in the past, and we got a decent boost with the initial update.

Something changed yesterday, and we are now below the pre-update level. ( Shaddows)

My homepage is showing some signs of life today. It’s sometimes popping up on page 2. No traffic increase. Desperately praying for a turnaround at this stage. (broccoli)

They are definitely tweaking something today. Feels like the core update. (SnowMan68)

@broccoli I too see the same and I and constantly dropping… (Fatlossplanner)

I have had a location-based travel-ish content site for the last 6 or 7 years. From the outset, my traffic steadily increased and it seemed like it came up as the top search result when you searched for almost anything related to my niche. Then, around June last year, traffic slowed down and kept dropping. I was down 40% or so YoY and the first weeks of March were the lowest yet, probably 50% of the traffic I had last year.

Then, March 12, boom, I was almost back to where I was last year. Traffic climbed until March 18, then started dropping again and I’ve lost most of my gains. I’m not sure what’s going on. (lina)

It looks like my gains have been rolled back. Sunday last week I saw nice gain of about 25%, which subsequently settled down to about 10 to 15% gain that then remained steady for the whole week. Now as of yesterday, that has been rolled back and it is look like I back to where I started. (NickMNS)

Things got better after a pretty poor start to March for the website I work on from Thursday last week.

If it sticks like this, then I’ll be happy. (vlexo)
